on foot
The Via della Lana e della Seta is 130 kilometers long and traditionally divided into six stages of about 23 kilometers each from Bologna to Prato and vice versa. The route is quite challenging, classified as medium-difficult. However, less experienced walkers should not give up: with the right training it is possible to "break up" each stage by stopping at strategic intermediate points.
Many stages also have deviations or variants that can lengthen the route by a few hours, but which allow you to encounter interesting sites, indicated in the guide. The route must therefore be customized with your own times and needs, as always, without rushing and ready for unexpected encounters!
The thread that unites the two cities at the ends of the route is linked to the industrial textile tradition of Bologna and Prato and the route allows you to deepen this bond by following natural and artificial evidence that narrate this past (and present).
You will find the two hydraulic works symbol of the route on the Reno and the Bisenzio, respectively the Chiusa and the Cavalciotto, and the museums and places dedicated to weaving and the history of looms: in Bologna the “Vittorio Zironi” Museum of fabric and upholstery, in Vernio the MU.MA.T Museum of Textile Machinery, in Prato the Textile Museum, in the former Campoli factory, an excellent example of recovery of industrial archaeology.
Furthermore, thanks to the continuous intersection with the Gothic Line, the path rightly commemorates many places of sad memories linked to the ferocious clashes of the Second World War, examples for all: Monte Sole and Casaglia.
